Chrome Extension Masks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini as Google Docs to Hide AI Use
A Chrome extension that disguises AI chatbot interfaces as Google Docs has gained traction among users who want to use tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini without drawing attention in public or workplace settings.
The extension, called GPTDisguise, launched with support only for ChatGPT but recently expanded to include Claude and Gemini after user requests, according to its developer, who goes by yuljg on Reddit.
How It Works
The extension overlays the standard interface of each AI platform with a layout that mimics Google Docs, a familiar word-processing environment used widely in offices and schools.
Users type queries into what appears to be a document, and the AI response appears inline — visually indistinguishable, at a glance, from someone editing a file.
TechRadar writer Eric Hal Schwartz said he uses the extension in public, a detail that illustrates the real-world demand driving its growth.
The developer has since added themes styled after Microsoft Word and Notion, moving the project beyond its original single-disguise concept.
Those additional interface options sit behind a paid tier, though the core Google Docs disguise remains accessible without a fee.
Limitations
The extension does not work with Grok, the AI assistant developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, according to testing by PiunikaWeb.
Resizing the browser window beyond a certain point also breaks the layout, causing text to fall out of alignment with the page borders.
Still, the core function — masking the visual identity of an AI chat interface — operates as the developer describes.
Context
Demand for low-profile AI tools reflects a broader shift in how people integrate AI assistants into daily routines — on public transit, in coffee shops and at desks where open AI use might invite scrutiny or violate workplace policy.
GPTDisguise sits in a growing category of browser-based tools that reshape how AI products appear rather than how they function.
Apple separately announced changes in Safari 27 that lower the technical barrier for building custom browser extensions, a move that could accelerate the release of similar interface-layer tools.
yuljg posted the update to the r/developersIndia subreddit, where the thread drew attention from developers and general users alike.
