Helium Browser 0.13.4.1 Adds Offline Translation for Mac, Chromium 149 Engine for All Platforms
Helium Browser released version 0.13.4.1 for macOS, Windows, and Linux, delivering a native offline translation feature for Mac users and a Chromium engine upgrade across all three platforms.
The release follows several weeks of active development that included expanded MV2 extension support — a browser extension standard — on Android and a series of interface customization changes.
macOS Gets Offline Translation via Apple’s System API
Mac users receive the most significant new capability: direct integration of Apple’s system-level translation service into the browser’s right-click context menu.
Highlighting foreign-language text and selecting “Translate…” from the context menu triggers a native macOS overlay sheet that renders the translation immediately, with options to copy the result or play text-to-speech audio.
The feature draws on Apple’s own translation architecture rather than routing text to an external server, which means it operates entirely offline if users Have Already downloaded the relevant language models through macOS System Settings.
That design keeps browsing data local, a point consistent with Helium’s stated privacy focus.
Chromium 149 Upgrade Ships on All Platforms
All three platforms receive a rebase to Chromium 149.0.7827.155, the open-source browser engine that underpins Helium.
The engine update carries security patches and performance improvements. It also enables Chromium’s built-in screenshot utility within the browser interface and disables the PDF infobar — the notification bar that appears when opening PDF files — by default.
Tab Interface Overhaul
Version 0.13.4.1 addresses a range of tab layout issues, particularly for users who work with vertical tabs or tab groups.
For vertical tab layouts, the update corrects alignment and icon sizing on the New Tab button and disables the tab-mute option when the vertical tab strip is collapsed, removing a source of accidental clicks.
Tab groups receive a broader redesign. Vertical tab groups now prevent text and line overlap. Horizontal layouts move the tab group underline to the bottom of the tab bar and make it thicker for clearer visual separation. The update also restores solid group header colors and adds new color options.
Hover state colors for horizontal tabs and the New Tab button also received corrections, and tab group hover cards are now enabled.
Context Menu and Localization Changes
Context menus now enforce a narrower maximum width to prevent oversized menus on text-heavy pages.
The onboarding flow has been integrated into Helium’s internationalization system, with improved newline handling and localized interface strings. The update also adds an option for developers and advanced users to run translations through local command-line interface tools.
Helium Browser version 0.13.4.1 is available through automatic update in browser settings or as direct downloads from the project’s GitHub repositories for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Helium positions itself as a privacy-oriented alternative browser built on Chromium, the same open-source engine used by Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
