Bitwarden Autofill Menus Vanish for Brave Browser Users After Latest Update
Bitwarden has confirmed a bug that causes its inline autofill menus — the small pop-ups that appear inside login fields to suggest saved passwords — to disappear entirely for users of the Brave Browser.
The problem surfaced after Brave pushed its v.91.171 update, which bundled an upgrade to Chromium 149, the open-source engine that underpins Brave, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Edge.
Reports came in simultaneously from users on Windows, macOS, and Linux, all describing the same behavior: the autofill overlay simply fails to inject into web pages.
What Still Works
The Bitwarden vault itself opens normally when users click the main extension icon. Background syncing also continues without issue — only the visual overlay is affected.
Standard fixes have not resolved the problem. Users report that uninstalling and reinstalling the extension, as well as creating a fresh browser profile, both fail to restore the menu.
By contrast, users running the same Bitwarden extension version — 2026.5.1 — in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge report no missing pop-ups.
What’s Causing It
Users examining the browser console identified two likely fault lines.
The extension attempts to load its scripts but encounters an error involving a duplicate script ID tied to FIDO2 registration — a protocol used for passwordless authentication. Others found content security policy warnings blocking the autofill overlay script specifically.
Together, those conflicts prevent the visual menu from rendering on screen.
A Working Workaround
Users do not need to wait for a patch to log in. The manual keyboard shortcut bypasses the broken overlay entirely.
Pressing Ctrl+Shift+L on Windows or Cmd+Shift+L on Mac fills credentials directly into login fields. The function works reliably despite the visual menu’s absence.
Bitwarden’s Response
A Bitwarden employee responded to user threads on the Bitwarden subreddit, confirming the team is actively tracking the defect.
The employee linked to an official GitHub issue tracker where engineers are logging technical details. The bug carries an assigned internal tracking ID.
Brave is a Chromium-based browser developed by Brave Software, founded by Mozilla co-founder Brendan Eich. Its v.91.171 update represents one of its regular Chromium engine upgrades, which periodically introduce compatibility changes that can affect third-party extensions.
