Google Search News Tab Bug Delivers Zero Results for Some Signed-In Users
Some Google Search users are seeing empty pages or 404 errors when searching the platform’s News tab — a bug that appears tied exclusively to specific Google accounts.
Affected users report that identical searches work correctly in Incognito mode, guest mode, or under a different Google Account on the same device, pointing to a server-side account-level fault rather than a local configuration problem.
The bug spans multiple browsers — including Chrome, Edge, and Safari — and affects desktop computers, tablets, and mobile devices alike.
What Users Are Experiencing
One thread on Google’s official support forums has collected more than 30 “I have the same question” votes, indicating the problem extends well beyond isolated cases.
Users in the Google Search Community report searching for high-volume terms such as “Ukraine” and “Canada” and receiving blank results pages. Some said broad queries like “world news” occasionally return results, while more specific searches — “New Zealand economy,” for example — return nothing at all.
Most affected accounts say the issue appeared suddenly, roughly three to four days ago.
Local Fixes Are Not Working
Users have attempted standard troubleshooting steps: clearing browser cookies, disabling extensions, restarting devices, and toggling Google’s Web & App Activity settings off and back on. None of those steps resolved the problem.
That pattern reinforces the account-specific, backend nature of the bug — local changes have no effect when the fault sits on Google’s servers.
Escalation Confirmed, No Fix Timeline Yet
A product expert on the Google Chrome community forums said they escalated the matter to the appropriate internal team for investigation. Google has not issued a public statement or provided a timeline for a resolution.
PiunikaWeb said its own team tested the News tab across Mac, iOS, and Android devices and could not reproduce the bug — consistent with the account-specific behavior users describe.
In the meantime, signing out or using Incognito mode restores News tab functionality for those affected.
Google Search handles an estimated 8.5 billion queries per day, according to widely cited industry figures, making widespread News tab failures a significant disruption for users who rely on the product for real-time information.
