Mozilla Working on Per-Profile Firefox Taskbar Pinning for Windows

Windows users running multiple Firefox profiles currently face a poor choice: all profiles stack under one taskbar icon with no visual distinction, or enabling the `taskbar.grouping.useprofile` setting — a browser flag that groups taskbar icons by profile — floods the taskbar with identical Firefox logos.

Neither option works well for users switching between work, personal, and other profiles throughout the day.

Mac Already Has It

Firefox on macOS lets users pin separate profiles as distinct Dock entries, giving each a clear, separate icon. Windows has had no equivalent.

Two separate threads in the Reddit community r/firefox surfaced user frustration with the gap, and a Mozilla employee responded in both.

“We’re working on it… should happen ‘soon’, though I don’t have an ETA to give right off,” said drubino-mozilla, the Mozilla employee, in one thread.

In an earlier thread posted roughly 10 days prior, the same employee said the team was working on a formal specification and considered the feature high priority.

No Timeline Yet

Mozilla has not announced a release date or confirmed which Firefox channel — Nightly, Beta, or stable — will receive the feature first.

Nightly and Beta are Mozilla’s pre-release testing builds, where new features typically appear before reaching the broader user base.

One Reddit commenter pointed out that users can already launch Firefox with a specific profile via command-line flags, a manual workaround that requires typing profile-specific instructions into a system terminal.

That approach, however, ties to Firefox’s older legacy profile system, not the newer profile management framework Mozilla introduced more recently.

Users migrating from Chrome or Brave — both of which support profile pinning natively — have flagged the gap as a friction point. In those browsers, each profile can sit as a distinct pinned icon in the taskbar without additional configuration.

Broader Browser Changes

Mozilla has separately rolled out other interface updates in recent weeks, including widgets on the Firefox New Tab page and a Built-In VPN offering.

Profile pinning on Windows represents a more structural change than either update, directly affecting how users navigate between browsing contexts across a workday.

Mozilla has not issued a formal statement beyond the Reddit comments from its employee.
