Brave Explores Dynamic Fee System for Zcash Transactions in Its Crypto Wallet

Brave is weighing whether to integrate a dynamic fee system for Zcash transactions inside its built-in crypto wallet, after its VP of Business Operations, Luke Mulks, ran a public poll on X to gauge community interest.

The move would mark a significant shift from Zcash’s current fixed-fee model, which has pushed transaction costs outside an optimal range as the value of ZEC — Zcash’s native token — has climbed.

The Technical Framework

The proposal originates with Shielded Labs engineering manager @shieldedmark, who outlined a tiered fee structure deployable within Zcash’s existing parameters without requiring a major network consensus update — the process by which distributed blockchain participants agree on rule changes.

That means the system could Roll Out incrementally, lowering the barrier to adoption across wallet platforms.

The framework introduces two user-facing features: Priority Delivery and a “Speed Up” function. Priority Delivery lets users pay a 4x standard fee to push their transactions to the front of the queue during periods of heavy network demand — comparable to a fast-lane option at airport security.

The “Speed Up” function addresses a separate problem. Zcash does not support Replace-By-Fee — a common mechanism on other blockchains that allows users to resubmit a stuck transaction at a higher fee. Without it, unconfirmed transactions sit in the mempool, a temporary holding area for pending transfers, until they expire.

The proposed workaround broadcasts a completely new transaction at the priority rate instead, hiding the technical complexity from the user.

Early Adoption

Unstoppable Wallet has already signed on to run the initial pilot. Developers are actively seeking additional wallet platforms to test the RPC — remote procedure call — fee estimation endpoints on the Zcash mainnet.

Brave has not confirmed a timeline for its own integration, but Mulks’ poll signals the company is actively evaluating demand.

Broader Brave Developments

Separately, Brave recently circulated an internal user survey on a planned overhaul of its native media playlist feature, centered on automated YouTube sync folders.

The company’s underlying browser technology is also spreading beyond its own product. Independent browser project Ladybird dropped its custom setup to adopt Brave’s open-source ad-blocking engine, extending the reach of Brave’s core infrastructure to a competing platform.

Brave, which launched in 2019 with a built-in ad blocker and a token-based privacy advertising model, added Zcash support to Brave Wallet as part of its broader push to support privacy-focused digital assets. Zcash uses a cryptographic method called zk-SNARKs to let users send fully shielded — fully private — transactions, distinguishing it from more transparent blockchains like Bitcoin.
